Compression Method Reduces Big Data Bottleneck (Scientific Computing) – UCLA has developed a new method of compressing data that makes it possible to process and compression data in real time more effectively than any previous format. The process can help alleviate some of the issues faced in processing big data, especially in the medical and scientific fields.

 

Governor wants voters to keep funding public-works projects (The Blade) – Governor Kasich has announced an initiative for the May ballot that will ask voters to renew and expand a $1.87 billion public works program aimed at updating infrastructure across the state.  

 

Colleges in Ohio to receive technical assistance grants to help students enter STEM fields: Higher Education Roundup (Cleveland.com) Five colleges in Ohio have been selected to receive the STEM Careers Initiative grant by Complete College America. This grant will help strengthen the STEM programs offered by the colleges and aid students in finding work upon graduation.

 

Gathering Strength For U.S. Manufacturing: Whirlpool Moves Production Of Washers To Ohio From Mexico (Forbes) – Whirlpool is set to open the world’s largest washing machine manufacturing plant in Ohio in April 2014. This factory will shift production of commercial washers from Mexico to Ohio, adding roughly 100 new jobs to the state.

 

Drive Capital raises another $43M, giving Kvamme-led VC firm $224M (Columbus Business First) – Drive Capital, a venture capital firm run by Jobs Ohio’s former chief, Mark Kvamme, has recently raised an additional $43.5 million in investments. Drive Capital is focused on helping to fund start-up companies in the Mid-West with a goal of having $300 million in investments to work with.
