3-State Project Will Explore Prior-Learning Assessment on Statewide Basis (The Chronicle of Higher Education) Public-college systems in Montana, Ohio, and Texas will work with the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning in a two-year effort to promote prior-learning assessments. Prior-learning assessments typically benefit adult, nontraditional students, who can earn course credits for expertise they have gained from life experiences.

APLU Announces Inaugural Designation of 16 Institutions as Innovation & Economic Prosperity Universities (Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities) In recognition of a strong commitment to economic engagement through a variety of activities, including innovation and entrepreneurship, technology transfer, workforce development, and community development, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) designated 16 public institutions as Innovation & Economic Prosperity Universities. The Ohio State University, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Toledo were three Ohio institutions out of the sixteen chosen nationwide to receive this special designation.

Ohio State U. Lets MOOC Students Grade Peer-Graders (The Chronicle of Higher Education) A team of writing instructors administering a MOOC on rhetorical composition built a custom peer-grading system designed to assess not only the quality of the essays submitted by their MOOC students, but also the quality of the feedback that other students in the course contributed after reading the essays.

Ohio's unemployment rate for September will not be released due to government shutdown (Cleveland.com) Due to the federal government shutdown, Ohio’s unemployment figures for September will not be released on time. Ohio’s figures have fluctuated in the past several months and analysts were hoping the September report would provide better insight into the state of the economy.

Shutdown’s science fallout could last for years (Politico) The gaps in information resulting from the shutdown could have effects for years to come, or even invalidate important studies. The CDC has been unable to collect and analyze important early-season flu information that is critical during outbreaks. As business resumes, many wonder if many government funded scientists might consider a move to the private sector.  

STEM classes get $5 million AEP gift (The Columbus Dispatch) The American Electric Power Foundation will contribute $5 million over five years to help up to 670 students to graduate high school with at least 12 college credits from Columbus State Community College. The program’s focus will be on STEM classes and will begin next year.
