Apple Seeks Freedom To Disclose Gov Data Demands (Information Week) Apple published its first transparency report this week to push back against government requests for user data without disclosure. Apple has filed legal briefs questioning the reach of many surveillance programs and laws that require them to turn over user data.  

Buy One, Get One Free (Inside Higher Ed) The University Press of Kentucky is giving free e-books to readers who own hard copies of titles and submit a photo of themselves holding a hard copy of a University Press of Kentucky book to their Tumblr. The press decided to start the e-book loyalty program after recognizing that many readers who own hard copies of books might also like to own the electronic version, but don't want to pay the additional cost for the e-book, it has the added benefit of increasing brand loyalty.

Facebook Invented Some Cool Big Data Software And Just Gave It Away For Free (Business Insider) Facebook will be releasing its database query software, Presto, to the public for free. In return for the free use of the software, users are expected to contribute to it, add features, and identify bugs.

Kids Tech U hopes to spark future scientists (Newark Advocate) A new STEM centered program for students aged 9 to 12 will begin in January in Licking County. The partnership between OSU-Newark, Denison University, and The Works, hopes to instill interest in science and college in the students, while also informing parents about how to prepare their children and finances for higher education.

OCLC and ProQuest work together to automate e-book collection management (Library Technology) A new collaboration between OCLC and ProQuest automates the process to keep e-book holdings from ebrary and Ebook Library up to date in WorldCat. This automated process is designed to remove the difficult and time-consuming task of cataloging and maintaining holdings information to keep records of e-book collections and links up to date.

VP Biden visits Ohio to push for spending on rail, bridges, ports, saying it will create jobs (The Findlay Courier) Vice President Biden visited a CSX rail yard in Findlay to highlight the success of Ohio’s investment in manufacturing transportation and the need for the nation’s continued investment in infrastructure to support manufacturing growth. 

Workers fear Lockheed Martin plant in Akron could be closed, mayor scrambling to save 500 jobs (News Channel 5) Hundreds of workers at the Lockheed Martin plant in Akron remain on edge as rumors continue to swirl that the facility on Massillon Road could be closed. Lockheed Martin released a statement indicating that due to sequester they were considering restructuring their operations in all locations.
