Tennessee Governor Proposes Free Community College (Chronicle of Higher Education) – Gov. Haslam of Tennessee has announced a proposal to use lottery money to pay for two years of community or technical college for every student in the state.

 

Reading proficiencies down across the state (Marion Star) – Accenture has teamed with 35 universities across 20 countries to provide a mentorship program to students studying in STEM fields.

 

Apple, Microsoft join carriers in $750M pledge to education (CNet) – A number of major technology companies have pledged $750 million worth of products, software, and monetary resources to help bring access to technology to low income students across the nation.

 

Federal Communications Commission to Double Federal Funding for High-Speed Internet in Schools (Alliance For Excellent Education) – The FCC has pledged $2 billion in investments over the next two years to bring high speed internet to roughly 15,000 schools nationwide. To meet this goal the E-Rate program has been restructured to avoid finding new funding for the project.

 

Farm bill creates second land-grant university in Ohio (Farm and Dairy) – The 2014 Farm Bill, expected to be passed into law in the coming weeks, will name Central State University as Ohio’s second land-grant university, opening up new sources of funding for the college.
