DOE awards $25.4 million for 'extreme scale' supercomputer interconnect design (Phys.org) The Department of Energy's Office of Science and the National Nuclear Security Administration have awarded $25.4 million in research and development contracts to five leading companies in high-performance computing to accelerate the development of next-generation supercomputers. Project supporters say that exascale computing is essential not only for research purposes, but for national security.  

Moody’s: Sequester May Hurt Research Universities’ Credit Ratings (Inside Higher Ed) Moody’s cited a survey that found 70 percent of large research universities had experienced funding reductions or delayed research projects due to sequestration. While they did not officially downgrade credit for any university, the warning is stark as the sequestration continues.

New resource center aims to find workers (LimaOhio.com) The Bellevue Development Corporation (BDC) unveiled plans for the Regional Resource Center which will concentrate on increasing the availability of qualified workers for manufacturers in Erie, Huron, Sandusky, and Seneca counties. A cornerstone of the effort is working with businesses and schools to attract young people to well-paying manufacturing jobs.

ORNL Uses New 3-D Printers To Break Down Development Barriers (Aviation Week) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee is placing thousands of 3-D printers in U.S. schools to give future designers and engineers experience with the technology. Oak Ridge is also working to develop the technology, testing its ability in size, scale, and materials.

Positive Turn for September Machine Tool Sales (IndustryWeek) Machine tools and related technology sales increased 5.8% over August’s figures. However, that is still a 31.1% decline from September 2012’s result and 11.3% behind the comparable nine-month total for 2012
