How the University of Maine Is Overcoming Tech Challenges for Rural Students (EdTech Magazine) The University of Maine has come up with creative ways to administer classes that work around the technological barriers rural students face.

MIT Will Offer MOOC Curricula, Not Just Single Courses, on edX (The Chronicle of Higher Education) MIT will offer a seven course sequence of MOOCs through edX. Students who pass a final examination of each course will receive a certificate acknowledging completion.

NASA Needs Stronger 3D Printed Materials (Product Design and Development) NASA has partnered with researchers at Missouri S&T to develop stronger materials and new ways to repair expensive components through additive manufacturing.

Ohio college gets nearly $3M for job training (WTVO) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College received the funds from the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program. The funds will allow the college to develop and expand innovative job training programs in the manufacturing field. 

Reauthorization of Higher Education Act to Begin Next Week (The Chronicle of Higher Education) In preparation for the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, Congress has held several committee hearings on college affordability and asked members of Congress to suggest changes in the act. Many of the suggestions parallel President Obama’s recently announced suggestions for higher education reform.

Rural southern Ohio school districts courting Chinese students (The Columbus Dispatch) Under a proposed plan, up to 200 Chinese high school students could enroll in school districts in four southeastern Ohio counties. The students would pay tuition to the school, increasing revenue for the district.

University camp centers on getting young women in STEM fields (The Daily Illini) The University of Illinois Extension and 4-H spearheaded an overnight science camp, STEM Education Outreach, for fifth and sixth grade girls focused on involving more women in STEM fields.

WSU creates new manufacturing center (Dayton Daily News) The Center for Manufacturing Sciences will teach topics ranging from bioengineering to laser micromachining. The Center, which places an emphasis on hands-on training and job placement, is expected to begin working with students in January.
