Colleges vie for big-name commencement speakers (Columbus Dispatch) — The arms race for speakers at campus commencement ceremonies has created a number of issues with which many colleges and universities have to cope before, during and after the annual speech.

More libraries than McDonalds and Americans still rely on them (NBC News) — A new report from Pew Research has found that libraries still play an important role in the lives of Americans, in spite of the rapid growth in personal technology — roughly half of Americans visited a public library last year, while 30% used a library website.

On campus beat: University of Wisconsin launches 'all you can learn' online option (Star Tribune) — Wisconsin has become one of the first public universities to offer a broad competency-based degree program. Under the new Flexible Option, designed mainly for working adults, students can take all the online courses they want for a three month period for $2,250.

Online at Community Colleges (Inside Higher Ed) — Online enrollment at community colleges continued to rise in 2013, even as overall enrollment has remained steady or even dropped for many institutions according to a new report from the Instructional Technology Council. However, MOOCs appear to be losing support, with fewer schools expressing interest in creating or expanding their MOOC offerings than in previous years.
