Apple Opening New Manufacturing Plant in Arizona (Industry Week): Apple announced it will open a new manufacturing plant in Arizona that will create 700 jobs at the plant and 1,300 in construction and other associated jobs. The plant will partner with GT Advanced Technologies Inc. to create material for Apple’s electronic devices.

Research grant aimed at less invasive study of brain signals (OSU Electrical & Computer Engineering News): A new four-year research through The Ohio State University’s ElectroScience Laboratory, will aim to develop technology that wirelessly collects and records brain waves. The study will be funded through a $2 million grant from the NSF and will be used to develop sensors to record and transmit brain wave information to health care providers.

Study: Student Debt Increasing for Four-Year Graduates (US News): A new study from the US Department of Education compares the effects of student debt on cohorts of students who received a bachelor’s degree over a 15 year period. Results from the survey show student debt to be increasing for four-year graduates.

Gates Foundation Places Big Bet on Teacher Agenda (Education Week): The Gates Foundation has spent over $700 million on teacher-quality incentives from 2008, though critics fear the foundation has an outsized influence on the K12 education agenda.

Manufacturers Draw Battle Lines Over Energy Efficiency Legislation (Gongwer Ohio): The Ohio Manufacturer’s Association will present its case at a hearing today in regards to energy efficiency requirements in Ohio. The OMA is at odds with two other statewide groups that want to see energy efficiency requirements scaled back.

CCAD in line for county grant for MindMarket incubator (Columbus Business First): Columbus College of Art & Design’s MindMarket, located in CCAD’s Design Studios, has been situated to receive $75,000 from Franklin County’s economic development director. MindMarket combines an incubator for arts-related businesses, a community lecture series on the economy, and a design agency selling services to businesses and organizations.
