Gov. Deal signs technical college grants bill (Atlanta Business Chronicle) – Georgia has signed a new law that will provide full tuition coverage to students attending technical colleges so long as they maintain a 3.5 grade point average. The program is expected to cover roughly 16,000 students and is aimed at improving the technical skills in the Georgian workforce.

 

UMBC unveils $1.7 million 'hands-on' science lab (Baltimore Business Journal) – With funding provided by the Howard Hughes Medical Center, the University of Maryland had constructed a new adaptable science lab that will provide STEM students with hands on lessons. During the summer the lab will serve as a research center for Howard Hughes.

 

Cray Signs $70 Million Supercomputer Contract With the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) (The Wall Street Journal) – Cray Inc. has signed a new contract with the Dept. of Energy to develop and install a next generation supercomputer at the NERSC. This will be the third Cray supercomputer installed at NERSC and is projected to be 10 times as powerful as the first system, “Hopper” that Cray installed there.

 

Google X Lab: Driverless Cars Mastering City Streets (Scientific Computing) – Google X lab just released its first update on its autonomous car project since 2012. According to the project’s leader Chris Urmson, Google has made significant breakthroughs that are now allowing the driverless cars to learn how to navigate dense urban areas, which were previously avoided due to their complexity. This sets a new benchmark for other manufacturers working on autonomous vehicles.
