Best, Brightest and Rejected: Elite Colleges Turn Away Up to 95%

(The New York Times) – Despite a decrease in overall college attendance, applications for the nation’s elite colleges have been soaring, bringing acceptance rates to an all-time low, with Stanford setting a new record of only accepting 5% of its applicants.

 

Ohio business owners increasingly reluctant to add jobs, PNC survey finds (Columbus Business First) – Despite expectations of growth in sales and profits among small to mid-sized businesses only 10% of firms said they plan to hire new people, down from 14% this time last year. This points to a view that the state’s economy is still in a volatile state as it continues to recover.

 

Toledo Public Schools Wins Nearly $4 Million of Grant Funding

(IdeaStream) – Toledo Public Schools has been awarded $3.8M from the new Youth Career Connect grant program (see below). This grant money will help connect five Toledo high schools with local businesses to provide internship and hands on learning opportunities.

 

Obama Wants Students Trained for 'In-Demand' Jobs (U.S. News and World Report) – $100 million in grants has been announced to redesign 24 schools across the country to better train students for jobs that are available. This program coincides with an apprenticeship consortium being formed that will provide college credit for apprenticeship work.

 

Financial literacy education has lasting impact (USA Today) – A long term study has found that basic financial literacy education in high school can lead to better decision making down the road, and yet the majority of students do not take such courses, making the student loan and credit card debt problems worse than they should be.
