Ohio Department of Higher Education Chancellor John Carey recently appointed Paul Schopis as the sixth permanent executive director of the Ohio Academic Resources Network (OARnet), and David E. Hudak, Ph.D., as the fourth permanent executive director of the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC).
Schopis and Hudak previously served as interim executive director of their respective organizations. Both groups are members of ODHE’s Ohio Technology Consortium, located on the west campus of The Ohio State University.
Hudak leads an organization supplying computing, storage, software and consulting services to more than 20 Ohio universities, as well as industry. He previously served as OSC’s director of Supercomputer Services and prior to that was OSC’s program director for Cyberinfrastructure and Software Development. Before his appointment at OSC, Hudak served as an associate professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Ohio Northern University from 1992-2000 and as chair of the Computer Science department from 1998-2000.
Hudak earned doctoral and master’s degrees in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan and holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Bowling Green State University.
OSC was created by the Ohio General Assembly in 1987 as “a statewide resource available to Ohio research universities both public and private. It is also intended that the center be made accessible to private industry as appropriate.” Today, OSC continues to address the expanding computational demands of academic and industrial research communities by providing a robust, state-of-the-art, shared infrastructure and proven expertise in advanced modeling, simulation and analysis.
Schopis leads an organization of more than 50 professional engineers, relationship management professionals, support staff and students. In his previous position as chief technology officer, Schopis developed the strategy and implementation of OARnet’s optical fiber network, data center services, virtualization offerings and cloud computing initiatives. He led the team that designed OARnet’s network, one of the nation’s leading statewide, high-speed networks for research and education, and was involved in all phases of its creation.
Schopis holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physical science from The Ohio State University.
OARnet was created the same year as OSC to “provide communications links from [the center] at Ohio State to the campuses of member Ohio academic institutions.” Today, OARnet provides Ohio's education, public broadcasting, health care and government communities with technology solutions, such as its statewide, 2,400-mile, 100 gigabit-per-second, fiber-optic network.
